‘Creating Hope Through Action’ is the theme for World Suicide Prevention Day. India has one of the highest suicide rates globally (12/100,000 population). CMC’s Department of Community Health has been serving rural communities in Kaniyambadi block of Vellore district for decades, acting as a catalyst for remarkable improvements in the health status of the community. But today, suicides are a growing concern, particularly among youth and senior citizens.
CMC’s CHAD team organised a rally in Bagayam at 7am on 9 September 2023 to raise awareness about common mental health issues, recognising when to seek help, reducing stigma and providing options for those in need. Over 270 people, young and old, participated, distributing health education materials, enacting skits on suicide prevention and publicizing vital suicide helpline numbers. Our Vellore District Collector Thiru. Kumaravel Pandian, IAS flagged off and joined the rally.
‘Creating Hope Through Action’ reflects the need for collective steps to address this urgent public health issue. All of us can act and #bethelight to prevent suicide.
