New visions for life

The pandemic has forced many of us to work from home, attend online classes and have much more screen time than usual. Unfortunately, this increases the risk of shortsightedness. Today is World Sight Day reminding us to give our eyes the care they need. Just like Vignesh who can see clearly now.

In 2009, Vignesh* had a tragic fall from a coconut tree.  With surgery and rehabilitation in CMC Vellore, he was ready to get back to life in a wheelchair. His disability did not come in his way. Vignesh worked as a coolie and supported his family. Today his older son is a mechanic and his younger son is studying in college.

Vignesh after the cataract surgery

Early this year, Vignesh realised he was gradually losing sight in his eyes. Despite the risks of the second wave of Covid, he went for a checkup at the Vision clinic in RUHSA**. The doctors said he needed cataract surgery for both eyes or he might lose his eyesight entirely. He was immediately referred to our Schell Eye Hospital. With support from friends and well-wishers like you, we were able to do his surgery free of cost. His sight restored, Vignesh now has a new vision. The vocational rehabilitation team in RUHSA will train him with new skills for his livelihood. Early this year, Vignesh realised he was gradually losing sight in his eyes.
