Harita (name changed) is a 12-year-old girl from Jharkhand. Worried about an abnormal swelling their daughter’s abdomen, her parents took her to a local hospital. Investigations revealed that both Harita’s kidneys were blocked, causing kidney failure, with steadily increasing creatinine levels. Untreated, she would soon need a renal transplant – costing far more than her devastated family could imagine or afford. Their world seemed to collapse when no local hospital was ready to attempt her surgery in such a critical stage. In this state of hopelessness and despair, they heard of CMC Vellore’s compassionate care for the vulnerable and underprivileged.
With a loan from a money lender and traveling 3 days by train, the family reached Vellore. CMC’s Paediatric Surgeons, with help from our Interventional Radiologists, initially placed tubes to drain Harita’s failing kidneys. Once stabilised, Harita underwent bilateral pyeloplasty (an operation to remove the blockage, allowing urine to flow freely from both kidneys again). Harita says “I was afraid to have a surgery, but the nurses and doctors at CMC are very kind.” After 3 weeks in the in-patient wards, she made good recovery with significant reduction in the swelling of the kidneys. Her creatinine levels are coming down, and expected to improve further. A total bill of ₹2.30 lakh was taken care of by CMC while the money they had borrowed back home was just sufficient for her family to cover living costs in Vellore.
Her parents were extremely relieved to see the swelling in Harita’s belly disappear and hear that her kidney function is improving. “Coming to CMC has saved my daughter,” says Harita’s father.
“It was our privilege to witness this total turnaround from hopelessness to a bright future,” says Dr. Ravi Kishore, CMC MBBS Alumni 1996 and Head of Paediatric Surgery. “This child truly represents CMC’s commitment to provide highest quality care to the most underprivileged and needy”.
