Little Angel* is two and a half years old and loves the company of her 3 older siblings and parents. She is from Jharkhand where her father is a daily wage labourer and her mother cares for the family at home.
In August last year, she developed a tumor in her left eye, hindering her eyesight. Treatment in nearby hospitals didn’t help. This devastated the family. They were advised to visit hospitals in Chennai or Vellore and told the cost could be between ₹8-10 lakhs, an amount they could never afford.
With some borrowed funds from friends and relatives, the family made their journey to CMC Vellore. Angel was admitted to the Department of Ophthalmology where she had a series of tests, surgery and biopsy. Angel’s parents were crushed when the tests confirmed the diagnosis was Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a cancer-like condition in her eye, that if left untreated can be life-threatening. Chemotherapy sessions were immediately planned with the Pediatric Oncology department.
Angel and her parents stayed in CMC’s Chatram which helped her be regular for the sessions. Angel responded well to the treatment. Her family is overwhelmed with gratitude for the financial support at CMC Vellore. As they enter the New Year, Angel’s family is filled with renewed hope, thankful for the kindness and help they received during this difficult season.
