Poorna, a Burns Survivour’s story
12-year-old Poorna* was alone at home with her brother, eager to assist her mother by burning the trash. Tragedy struck when a deodorant can exploded, engulfing everything around her in flames. She was rushed to CMC with severe burns covering 40% of her body. Despite daunting challenges and endless pain she pressed on through the acute recovery.
However, she realized that this injury had changed her life forever. Soon came the contractures and hypertrophic scars and multiple surgeries to correct the various deformities. She felt depressed, desolate and alone. Then she was invited to the annual burns camp where she met so many children like her with their own story of pain, perseverance, and triumph. She felt at home. Now, as she prepares for NEET, Poorna dreams of becoming a doctor, inspired by those who once tended to her wounds.
Burns Survivour Camp
Organized by the Department of Pediatric Surgery, the camp is supported by various medical specialties including Plastic Surgery, Dietary, HLRS, Physiotherapy and occupational therapy. The Paediatric burns survivour camp serves as a beacon of hope and healing for children like Poorna, fostering a sense of community and resilience amidst adversity. Here, children with burns bond with fellow survivors, share their journey, and gain strength from the camaraderie. Every year over 40 burns survivors, now life-long friends, gather for a day of celebrations – games, cultural activities and free health check-ups. On 25th May 2024, the event brought together 50 resilient children and 85 supportive parents fostering a sense of camaraderie and healing.
