Racing towards Recovery!
Rani’s heart attack transformed her life … now she is healthier than ever!
Rani, 58, is a widow from Vellore. She lives with her children and seven grandchildren. One day last year, she suddenly had an unbearable pain in her chest. She felt dizzy and started sweating. Her son rushed her to the Cardiac Emergency at CMC. The doctors operated and saved her life.
When Rani was first admitted in the ward, she met CMC’s Cardiac-Rehabilitation team. “Akka, you will walk out of the hospital on your own feet,” they encouraged her. She had never seen a treadmill before, but soon she was walking and jogging on it. “The nurses were afraid that my sari would get caught in the machine. They asked me to wear pants! So next time I left home wearing track-pants and tied my sari on top of that,” she laughs.
After completing the Cardiac-Rehab programme, Rani joined the Running Club. She practices every single day, waking up at 5am to jog 10km around the sports field. Last week, the Club members ran to the top of Palamathi hills just outside Vellore.
Running up the steep slopes was a struggle but Rani made it right to the top! “When people ask how a lady, a grandmother like me, can be running, I tell them anyone can do it. If you have two legs, you also can be a runner,” Rani smiles confidently. This Sunday, on ‘World Heart Day’ she hopes to register for the 2020 Chennai Marathon!
